Rising single-seater star Liam Lawson is excited to be returning to the world’s most southern motor racing circuit when the New Zealand F1600 championship series is contested at Invercargill’s Teretonga Raceway this weekend.
The 14-year old Pukekohe teenager has totally dominated the national Formula Ford series, qualifying fastest at every track so far and bagging nine races on the trot. Coupled with races in the South Island Series, he remains unbeaten over 12 race starts.
When Lawson made his Teretonga debut back in December he practiced in wet conditions and weather predictions are forecasting much the same this time round.
“I’m really excited to be back down in Invercargill. The rain looks like it’s going to play a big part in the weekend which I am looking forward to as I love Teretonga in the wet,” said Lawson.
While he finished well clear of the field at the last round at Christchurch’s Ruapuna Park Raceway, Lawson expects the competition to be much closer.
“Last time we were down here for the South Island Series the competition was much closer and I expect the field will be more even too,” he said.
Lawson has finished ahead of his closest championship rival Michael Collins (Christchurch) in every race so far but there are several other drivers he’ll be keeping a close eye on, including improving locals Ethan Anderson and Jordan Michels.
The NZ F1600 championship has attracted about 20 entries for each round.
After winning the SpeedSport Scholarship in 2015 and contesting a season in Formula First single-seaters, Lawson stepped up to the more powerful Formula Ford cars this season. His campaign is assisted by NZ Childcare Finance, Another Orange Service Centre, Counties Fitness and the supporters of his Club 500 program.
