Young New Zealand race driver Liam Lawson hasn’t given up his chase for victory in the German Formula 4 championship and heads into the penultimate round at Nurburgring this weekend still holding second place and determined to add to his season’s string of podiums.
Although he has slipped to 46 points behind the championship leader, Lirim Zendeli of Germany, the 16-year-old Kiwi is feeling confident following a successful test at the circuit.
“There’s a bit of work to do to claw back the advantage [to Zendeli] but after my first real test at the track in the dry I feel much more confident.
“Qualifying well is going to be really important this weekend as it’s quite a tight track and there’s not a lot of passing opportunities.
“The main focus for me is scoring as many points as possible,” said Lawson.
Lawson has so far driven his Turners-backed F4 car to nine podiums in 14 races with six races remaining in the championship.
As well as consolidating his position is the drivers championship, Lawson is also, along with Danish driver Frederik Vesti, aiming to keep closing the gap in the Teams’ championship to Zendeli’s US Racing outfit. Lawson and Vesti are Dutch-based Van Amersfoort Racing’s two nominated drivers and they have been chipping away at the German team’s lead over recent rounds. The margin is now done to 23 points.
Following just two championship races at the last round held in conjunction with the German F1 GP, the format this weekend returns to the regular two-part qualifying and three championship races. All sessions will be available via live streaming and live-timing at www.liamlawson.live .
Qualifying begins at 3.25am Saturday with Race 1 at 9.05 Saturday night, with Race 2 and 3 on Sunday, 1.45 am and 7.20pm New Zealand time.
