Lawson, who won the national title last month on his 15th birthday to become the youngest ever Formula Ford champion, will test with Adelaide based Team BRM at the Mallala race circuit.
Formula 4 is now recognised worldwide as the development category for young drivers and is entering it’s third year of competition in Australia.
Following his successful New Zealand season, which saw Lawson win 14 of the 15 championship races, backers of the Pukekohe teenager are keen to see him experience driving a more powerful ‘wings and slicks’ car.
“I only found out a few days ago I was going to test the F4 car,” said Lawson.
“At this stage it’s just a test, but I’m really excited to get this opportunity. If it all goes well it may lead to some racing later in the year.”
As part of his New Zealand championship win, Lawson has the opportunity to attend the Road To Indy Shootout in America at the end of this year and gaining some overseas experience will help towards his preparation. The Shootout prize is worth $US200,000.
Team BRM is one of Australia’s most successful race teams with multiple championship successes in open-wheel racing and are the current Formula 4 Teams’ champion.
Lawson will be the first New Zealand driver to test in the Australian Formula 4 category.
The world governing body of motorsport, the FIA, recently announced the renaming of the GP2 category to lineup with their pathway programme for junior drivers, which sees Formula 4 competition followed by Formula 3, now Formula 2 and the pinnacle Formula 1.
